What is Baptism?
Baptism is an important step of obedience that shows others you have personally trusted Jesus for your salvation. Jesus was baptized when He was on the earth, and we do this to follow His example. When Christ-followers are baptized, they are submerged under water to identify with the death and burial of Jesus and raised out of the water to identify with His resurrection.
Baptism is a public declaration of your personal commitment to follow Jesus. You are saying to everyone, "I am a Christ-follower."
Who is it for?
Baptism is for anyone who personally made a commitment to follow Jesus as Leader and Forgiver.
From the very beginning, people were baptized when they turned from their own way of living (repentance) and decided to live Jesus' way.
How will I be baptized?
You will be placed under the water and immediately raised up out of the water. This is the way Jesus was baptized.
Immersion is how believers were always baptized in the New Testament.
Frequently Asked Questions
DOES BAPTISM "SAVE" ME?
Baptism doesn't make you a believer - it shows that you already believe. Baptism does not "save" you. Only your faith in Christ does that. Baptism is like a wedding ring - it's the outward symbol or sign to others of the commitment you already made in your heart.
CAN INFANTS BE BAPTIZED?
Some churches practice a "baptism of confirmation" for children. This ceremony is intended to be a covenant between the parents and God on behalf of the child. The parents promise to raise their child in the faith until the child is old enough to make his own personal confession of Christ. This is different from the baptism in the Bible which was only for those old enough to believe.
There is no evidence in the Bible that any method was used other than immersion. The meaning of the word itself describes immersion.
